How Do Lasers Work in Dentistry?

All lasers work by delivering energy in the form of light.  When used for surgical procedures, the laser acts as a cutting instrument or a vaporiser of tissue that it comes in contact with.  It also speeds up soft tissue healing, reduces pain sensation and has an antimicrobial action.

Benefits of Surgical Laser Dentistry

Surgical procedures performed using soft tissue dental lasers often do not require sutures (stitches).

Certain laser dentistry procedures do not require anesthesia.

Laser dentistry minimises bleeding and swelling during soft tissue treatments.

Bacterial infections are minimised because the high-energy beam sterilizes the area being worked on.

Damage to surrounding tissue is minimized.

Wounds heal faster and tissues can be regenerated.

 

Soft Tissue Laser Surgical Procedures

 

  • Crown Lengthening: Dental lasers can reshape gum tissue to allow recreation of symmetry and to expose healthier tooth structure for further restorative techniques (eg crowning)
  • Gummy Smile: Dental lasers can reshape gum tissue to improve the appearance of a gummy smile.
  • Muscle Attachment (Frenula): A laser frenectomy is an ideal treatment option for children who are tongue tied (restricted or tight frenulum) and babies unable to breast feed adequately due to limited tongue movement.  A laser frenectomy may also help to eliminate speech impediments or muscle pulls causing localised recession.  Traditional surgical frenectomy takes much longer to achieve than with a laser and has more discomfort associated with it.
  • Soft Tissue Folds (Epulis): Dental lasers may be used for the painless and suture-free removal of soft tissue lumps often caused by ill-fitting dentures or trauma.
  • Benign Tumors: Dental lasers may be used for the painless and suture-free removal of benign tumors from the gums, palate, sides of cheeks and lips or skin tags

 

Non Surgical Uses

 

  • Cold Sores / Apthae: Low intensity dental lasers reduce pain associated with cold sores and ulcers and minimise healing time.  Immediate pain relief can be achieved with just one treatment
  • Muscular pain- The use of a Laser promotes faster healing and often instantaneous pain relief from any muscle injury
  • Periodontics- Lasers are used to remove diseased, infected, inflamed and necrosed soft tissue within the periodontal pocket. The Laser wavelength also helps to sterilize periodontal pockets reducing the bacterial load and improving outcomes
  • Endodontics -The combination of sodium hypochlorite and diode laser light (940 nm) has a synergistic effect, intensifying the bactericidal action.  This means that there is much better longterm prognosis for ‘root treatments’ completed with the addition of laser bacterial reduction
